Even though it doesn’t quite feel that way yet, it’s finally Spring! And we all know what that means:unpredictable weather. It is no surprise that Spring brings the wild weather to our area.  The Ozarks weather the past few weeks has gone from below freezing one day to sunny & 70’s the next.  When the weather drastically changes we have a higher chance of severe weather including high winds, hail or tornadoes… Yikes!  Although this weather can be scary, there are steps you can take to ensure you are ready.

It is important to know who your insurance company is, and the name of your agent.  Add the phone number into your cell so if you find yourself in a situation where you need their help, you’ll have it ready to go and won’t have to search for it. It is even harder to find a phone number if your internet is down!  Most likely your agent will direct you to an 800 number for claims filing assistance, but it’s important to call them to let them know what’s going on and have them lead you in the right direction.

In a storm emergency it can be easy to panic, but always remember to take care of yourself and your family first, and know who to contact.  Here are a few simple proactive things to do:

• Add important numbers into your cell phone such as your insurance agent and your power company.
• Pack or review your weather emergency kit.  If you don’t already have one click here for tips on what to include.
• Know how your kids school or daycare handles a weather emergency ahead of time.  Do you need to pick them up early or do they have safe shelter?
• Some towns have tornado shelters at their community center or school for the public.  If you don’t have a safe place at your home or work seek out these shelters.

Not only should you know and practice preparing for storms, but get your family and loved ones on the same page. Make sure everybody knows where they should go and what they should bring during extreme weather. Know where to locate anything that would be needed and practice your emergency plan.

Understanding how insurance works can give you peace of mind if a crisis comes up.
