How To Prepare Your Car For The Winter Season

Winter is quickly approaching, along with the below freezing temperatures and icy roads we all dread. Nobody wants to end up stuck on the side of the road in the middle of a snow storm, right?

Here are a few tips on how to prepare for the winter:

  • Create a winter supply box and leave it in the trunk. Include things like a pair of gloves, a blanket, a flashlight and batteries, matches or a small candle, and snack food and water. All of these items would be of some help in the case of something going wrong while traveling.
  • Make sure the car’s tire pressure is where it needs to be. Follow the manual’s recommendations for pressure level. If needed, tires can be aired up at mostly any gas stations low charge or even free. A gauge will be needed to check the pressure, and these can be bought at any auto supply store and some gas stations.
  • Switch to winter windshield wiper fluid. When it is snowing or sleeting outside, sometimes ordinary wiper fluid just won’t do. Winter fluid is made for winter weather and unlike regular wiper fluid, it will not freeze on the windshield.
  • Have your battery checked. Cold weather forces our cars to work extra hard. The main reasons car batteries fail more often in winter are: reduced capacity, increased draw from starter motors, and increased draw from accessories.
  • Know your cities car accident procedure.  Can you call 911?  Or move to a safe place and exchange information?
  • Keep a roadside assistance phone number handy.  Check with your car insurance provider to see if you have towing/ roadside assistance on your policy.  Add the number into your cell.

These are just a few things to prepare your car for the winter season.  Car manuals are a great resource to take advantage of as well. Things differ from car to car so it’s important to know what applies to one’s own specific car.

Preparing beforehand reduces the possibility of something going wrong on the road.  Make sure your car is properly covered in case of a winter accident. Contact our office to review your car insurance coverage, 417-882-1800.
